Covey Run Kennels was founded in 1990, based primarily on the
philosophy of soundness of form,
temperament, and function in sporting dogs.
We started with the best foundation
stock that we could find, from both American
and German Deutsch Kurzhaar (DK)
bloodlines, and have steadily built upon and
improved that original foundation through a
carefully planned breeding program. We
primarily emphasize controlled line breeding
of our imported German dogs, but include an
occasional out-crossing to renew vigor in
the lines. The result of this program
represents what we believe to be some of the
finest versatile gun dogs available in America today.
Our Deutsch Kurzhaars are all genetically
sound, well-put-together animals with even
temperaments and beautiful conformation.
They are bred for today's foot hunter, and
are very versatile, medium-range gun dogs.
Covey Run DK's seek to reinforce the
German's original reasons for developing the
Deutsch Kurzhaar (German Shorthair) - to
produce a versatile gun dog that is equally
at home in the house with your children, or
in the field in pursuit of upland game birds
or waterfowl, or tracking fur-bearing
animals. Obedient and intelligent, as well
as loyal and affectionate, Covey Run DK's
are a delight to own and train.
We specialize in full German breeding of our
DK lines, and have puppies occasionally
available. Our dogs are found in every
possible color
combination - from bright white ticked, to
liver roan, liver and white patched and
ticked to solid liver, and black and white
to solid black. All of our puppies are
whelped and raised indoors, and are
well-socialized with adults, small children,
and other dogs. They have their tails docked
and are all vaccinated and
wormed before they go to their new homes.
Hunting, showing and testing:
At Vom Covey Run Kennels, we are hunters
first, but believe in the German philosophy,
that "form follows function". The best
versatile dogs perform so well because they
are structurally sound and conformationally
correct. In order to ensure that our
breeding stock conforms as closely as
possible to the "ideal" of the breed, we
participate
in various tests and breed conformation
shows. In particular,
we enter German versatile dog tests
sponsored by the
NADKC and
JGV-USA, along
with NAVHDA tests. We also particpate
occasionally in AKC hunt tests and walking
trials, as well as
NSTRA fun trials.
However, we do so only to showcase the
qualities we have "bred in" to our lines.
These lines are not "show dogs" and
they are not "field trial dogs". They are
true, versatile gun dogs in the European
tradition.
Our Guarantee:
Because of our belief in our breeding
program, Covey Run Kennels offers an
unconditional guarantee against any
currently known and discernable genetic
defects on all of the dogs we have bred. This guarantee
covers such disorders as hip dysplasia,
genetic heart defects, von Willebrand's,
and others. Additionally, we offer a 30-day
general health guarantee from the date of
purchase to cover any other non-heritable
illnesses. The guarantee is honored
through replacement with a similar dog, as
soon as one is available*.
