Hi Nancy...
Ares is doing great!!! He is one of the most lovable dogs we have ever owned. But true to his name, he loves to hunt.
Ares knows and understands all of the basic commands: Sit, Down, Whoa, Heel and Here. On sit, he will stay at sit while I walk completely around him in both directions. I can approach him from the front, back, or either side and I can step over him from the right to left heal position without him moving. [He is] very intelligent, strong desire to learn, very tractable, unbelievable eye contact.
We go to the field at least 4 time a week. Ares is hunting in front of me very nicely. He is beginning to develop a hunting pattern but this is still in the very early stages. I have seen him range out to 50-60 yards but he is still more comfortable at about 20-30 yards right now.
He will sight point a wing in the yard so I know the instinct is there. He will point my cat in the house. I have not yet seen him point in the field. There are a lot of quail in the areas we go to but they are scale quail and they tend to run a lot so Ares has not been in a real good position to point yet. But I have seen him pick up the scent of a covey, show a very excited hunt and track their general direction of travel. I have been having a hard time locating quail or chukar to buy, so Ares has not been worked on planted birds yet.
I have done three or four drag tracks with either a dead duck or a dead pigeon and although he has wandered off the track each time he has found his way back and located and retrieved the bird each time. He is using a combination of high and low nose on his tracks. Tracking is new to me but I was really impressed that he would do this with virtually no training.
Ares loves to come in the house. He has really bonded with me and my wife. He loves to lay in our laps in the evening. Ares likes my other dogs and they really like him. He particularly likes playing with my Jack Russell. He can't figure out the cat, he's very curious about her. Ares is house broken and just this week he has started going to the door and asking to be let out. Ares is just a pleasure to be around.
I hope I have not been too
long winded but I am really
excited about this pup!
